Escaping post-war Europe, visionary architect László Toth comes to America to rebuild his life, his work, and his marriage to his wife Erzebet after being forced apart during the war by changing borders and regimes. Alone in a strange new country, Laszlo settles in Pennsylvania, where a wealthy and prominent industrialist, Harrison Lee Van Buren, recognizes his talent for construction.
