Margaret: I could spend the rest of my life here

Narrative

A cross-generational story about families and their special place, love, loss, laughter and life. Based on the comic strip "Here" by Richard McGuire It was first published as a strip in the comic strip magazine "Raw" in 1989, and was expanded into a 300-page graphic novel in 2014. At one point in the film, Richard’s father names several towns that he says are along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, when in fact these are all towns that are along Interstate 80 in PA, which had not even been built at the time.. [from the trailer] Richard: You know, if you want, you can spend the rest of the night here.

Thanks to films like Back to the Future, Forest Gump, Cast Away, & The Polar Express, I’m always interested in “the next Robert Zemeckis project.” In this film, the acclaimed director once again demonstrates his technical prowess and innovation – if he lacks the clear storytelling punch his films are usually known for. To give you a very basic overview, Here tells the story of a single plot taken from one angle – over a long period of time (dinosaurs to 2020+).

He gives a great performance and his chemistry with Wright has held true over the years

Ostensibly, it focuses on the life and family that Richard (Tom Hanks) & Margaret (Robin Wright) cultivate in that space their entire lives. There’s no doubt that Here is a technical achievement in filmmaking from Zemeckis and DP Don Burgess. Making anything compelling on one fixed camera point seems to break the rules of the film itself, but it works well enough here to keep the viewer interested. “Static” is not the same as “boring”; It’s also a return – either through outdated AI or expression – to the great “everyman” roles that Hanks thrives in.

I only really cared about Richard & Margaret (and their orbit) from an emotional perspective

Yet there’s something missing here, and I think it’s, ironically, a lack of time in the Hanks/Wright angle. While removing the other character arcs entirely would break the whole concept, I found myself not at all invested in the Native American, Revolutionary patriots, or 1940s inventors building the house “backstories,” if you will. . Despite a few heartwarming/thought-provoking moments and some fine technical prowess, the ceiling here is limited by the technicality of this piece.

Perhaps if it had been cradle-to-grave wires on screen, things would have been different, but the breadth of coverage also means a narrowing of time in some areas (to the detriment of the film as a whole).
