Butalbital-Acetaminophen – Uses, Side Effects, and More

This medicine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. This medication may interfere with certain lab tests (such as urine 5-HIAA levels), possibly causing false test results. Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually every 4 hours as needed. Do not take more than 300 milligrams of butalbital in a 24-hour period. Keep your medication in a safe place to protect it from theft. Selling or giving away this medication is dangerous and against the law.

This medication may interfere with certain medical/lab tests, possibly causing false test results. If you are using the liquid form of this medication, carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose. In capsule form, the recommended dosage is usually one to two pills every 4 hours as needed.

What are the side effects of butalbital-acetaminophen-caffeine?

Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Butalbital Compound. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.

Aspirin and caffeine are contained in many combination medicines. Taking certain products together can cause you to get too much of a certain drug. Check the label to see if a medicine contains aspirin or caffeine. Though it helps many people, this medication may sometimes cause addiction. This risk may be higher if you have a substance use disorder (such as overuse of or addiction to drugs/alcohol). Take this medication exactly as prescribed to lower the risk of addiction.

Esgic-plus® Tablets (butalbital, acetaminophen and caffeine tablets, USP 50 mg/500 mg/40 mg) are indicated for the relief of the symptom complex of tension (or muscle contraction) headache. To obtain the best possible outcome, NAC should be administered as soon as possible where impending or evolving liver injury is suspected. Intravenous NAC may be administered when circumstances preclude oral administration. Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with this combination product. It is also not known whether butalbital, acetaminophen and caffeine can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. This product should be given to a pregnant woman only when clearly needed.

Using this medicine with any of the following medicines is not recommended. Your doctor may decide not to treat you with this medication or change some of the other medicines you take. Appropriate studies have not been performed on the relationship of age to the effects of butalbital, acetaminophen, and caffeine combination in children younger than 12 years of age.

Do I need to take butalbital-acetaminophen-caffeine with food?

Butalbital is a barbiturate, which is a controlled substance that has a sedating effect on your brain. It’s better at relieving psychological tension and anxiety than the other two ingredients alone. This product may impair mental and/or physical abilities required for the performance of potentially hazardous tasks such as driving a car or operating machinery. Such tasks should be avoided while taking this product. No adequate studies have been conducted in animals to determine whether acetaminophen or butalbital have a potential for carcinogenesis, mutagenesis or impairment of fertility.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist how much acetaminophen is safe to take. But acetaminophen may cause other unwanted effects when taken in large doses, including liver damage. Caffeine is cleared through metabolism and excretion in the urine. Hepatic biotransformation prior to excretion, results in about equal amounts of 1-methylxanthine and 1-methyluric acid. Of the 70% of the dose that is recovered in the urine, only 3% is unchanged drug.

Procedures to limit the continuing absorption of the drug must be readily performed since the hepatic injury is dose dependent and occurs early in the course of intoxication. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA.
